Brera Art Gallery

Museum Book

Brera Art Gallery’s collections are housed in the ex convent of the order of the Umiliati (XII century). The convent passed to the Jesuits in 1571 who funded there an important and celebrated school. The structure of the Gallery is the result of the changes it underwent from 1600 by Francesco Maria Ricchini and, later, Giuseppe Piermarini. In 1773 the Jesuits were disbanded and the property of the building passed to the Government. The building, in typical old barocco style, houses several cultural institutions like the Astronomical Observatory and the National Braidense Library (funded in 1773 by Maria Teresa D’Austria). The Gallery’s art collections began with the suppression of religious entities wanted in 1776 by Maria Teresa D’Austria and in 1805 by Napoleone Bonaparte. Many works exposed in the collections were the result of legacies and purchases. One of the most important works exposed is the Cristo Morto (“Dead Christ”) by Andrea Mantegna. Thanks to agreements with other museums, the Gallery houses an important Flemish art section dating XVII century with paintings by Rubens, Joardens, Van Dyck and Rembandt. Purchases and legacies went on till the Second World War. They brought to the Gallery important works by Correggio, Pietro Longhi, Piazzetta, Tiepolo, Canaletto and Fattori, the Cena in Emmaus (“Dinner in Emmaus”) by Caravaggio and the Pergolato by Silvestro Lega. The extraordinary legacy of Emilio and Maria Jesi dates in the seventies. They donated to the museum works of the most important painters of 1900, like Boccioni, Braque, Carrà, De Pisis, Marino Marini, A. Modigliani and Morandi. In 2001 a part of the collection belonging to Lamberto and America Vitali was given to the Gallery.
